Meet your local coordinator - Jess
Hi, I’m Jess. I'm 37 years old and I work in admin and sales. In the past I've mainly managed offices, worked in event planning and event management, and as a disability support officer. I'm also a qualified makeup artist.
I was diagnosed in 2006 at the age of 19. My diagnosis came about after doing some research after a miscarriage and a comment by a random GP about how my symptoms resembled endo, but that I was "too young" to have it. Back then I did not know a single other person with endo, so I did my own research. As soon as I was diagnosed I started speaking with anyone who would listen about endo and how common and debilitating it is. Raising awareness has always been a goal of mine.
From ages 19-29 I had 9 surgeries for stage 4 endometriosis. At 35 I had my 10th laparoscopy. I've had endo found/removed from a wide variety of areas such as appendix, rectum, bladder etc, including an area that has something to do with the hip (I could barely walk for the 9 months leading up to that surgery) as well as the common pelvic locations. I've been told there is a possibility I could have endo on my liver and pericardium (sac surrounding the heart).
I also have PCOS, adenomyosis and infertility. I am yet to conquer the fertility battle, but I hope to try IVF sometime in the near future. Due to my conditions, a good portion of my 20's was spent in hospital unable to work, study or socialise.
I have always been a public patient and one of the things I'm most passionate about is fighting for better timely and appropriate services and understanding within the medical system, in particular the public system. As well as awareness and education in the general community. I've worked on many projects, including having my 9th laparoscopy (almost 4 hour surgery) photographed for a visual endo book, and I've done a few media interviews regarding endo over the years.
I've been a part of the Canberra support group (formally known as CEN) since day one. I've ran the in-person events for about 10 years now, and since becoming QENDO about 5 years ago I've helped manage the group overall including the FB side of things. I enjoy working with the other Canberra representative to ensure our region is up to date on everything and what we can/need to do for them.
I feel strongly about people having a safe place (in person or online) to go whenever they need support, guidance or reassurance. Ensuring everyone feels safe, supported and them knowing people are fighting for them for a better future is my biggest priority.
