    Even young and seemingly healthy individuals benefit from a GP who tracks essential details like allergies, medications, and family history. All your health information is stored in one place, making it easier to schedule health checks, including cervical screenings, vaccines, or blood tests.

  3. Trusted Partnership
    Having a go-to GP fosters trust and comfort, enabling you to openly discuss your health concerns without repeatedly explaining your medical history to new doctors.

Finding the Right GP

Where to Start

  • Online Search: Look for local clinics online. Many websites include doctors' bios, qualifications, and areas of special interest.

  • Recommendations: Ask family, friends, or healthcare professionals like your pharmacist, physiotherapist, or midwife. Keep in mind whether you’d feel comfortable bumping into them at the clinic.

Key Considerations

When researching GPs, consider:

  • Location & Accessibility: Is the clinic convenient with ample parking?

  • Availability: Do their opening hours suit your schedule?

  • Fees: Do they bulk bill, or is it a mix of private and bulk billing?

  • Appointment Systems: Do they offer telehealth or walk-ins?

  • Special Interests: Some GPs specialise in areas like women’s health, mental health, or pediatrics.

  • Onsite Services: Clinics with pathology, pharmacies, or allied health professionals can save time.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Seek a GP who speaks your language or understands your cultural background.

  • After-Hours Care: Check if the clinic offers after-hours services or home visits.

Qualifications to Look For

Look out for additional certifications indicating expertise in women’s health:

  • CWH: Certificate in Women’s Health

  • Dip Obs / DRANZCOG: Diploma in Obstetrics

  • Adv Dip Obs / Adv DRANZCOG: Advanced Diploma in Obstetrics

Even without these, many GPs have a special interest in women’s health, which will often be highlighted in their bio.

Trial Your Choice

After your first appointment, reflect on these points:

  • Did you feel heard and respected?

  • Was the GP sensitive and clear in their explanations?

  • Were your questions answered?

  • Did you feel included in treatment decisions?

  • Do you trust them and feel confident in their care?

It’s okay to visit multiple GPs before finding the right fit. If switching GPs, ask your previous clinic to transfer your medical records for continuity.

Maximising Your Appointments

To help your GP provide quality care:

  • Book a double appointment if you have multiple or complex concerns. Standard appointments (10–15 minutes) may not be sufficient.

Chronic Conditions and GP Management Plans

If you have a chronic condition lasting 6+ months, your GP can create a GP Management Plan (GPMP) and Team Care Arrangement (TCA) to access Medicare-funded allied health services.

  • What’s Included: 5 Medicare-funded visits per year to allied health professionals like dietitians, physiotherapists, psychologists, or podiatrists.

  • Eligibility: Your GP determines if you qualify and coordinates care across your healthcare team.

Fees: Some allied health professionals charge a gap fee, while others bulk bill. Ask your GP for recommendations if cost is a concern.
